The sector has grown due to the rise in e-commerce and the adoption of automated practices. However, the sector suffers from low productivity, skills gaps and skills shortage vacancies.

The logistics sector has increased by 14,000 jobs in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire since 2011. The sector has 21,700 available roles locally and is worth £1.3bn in GVA per annum. Planned development at Chatterley Valley and the £1bn West Midlands Interchange will further strengthen the sector locally.

The Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Skills for Growth Survey (Metro Dynamics) highlights that 50% of businesses within the sector experiences 50% experienced difficulties recruiting for vacant roles in the last 12 months whilst over 60% of businesses experienced hard to fill vacancies was a lack of skilled operational staff.
