Spotless Cleaning (Spotless Midlands Ltd), a growing provider of cleaning and support services over 200 client sites, faced a common challenge experienced by many expanding businesses: the need to upskill their workforce without compromising budget. With ambitions to strengthen their service offering, improve health and safety knowledge, and enhance their Support Services division, the team identified several training opportunities, but non‑mandatory training costs made it difficult to proceed.

Accessing the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Grant, delivered through the Skills Hub, provided the vital support needed to move forward.

Before applying for the grant, Spotless Cleaning met with one of the Skills Hub’s Business Advisors, who carried out a Training Needs Analysis (TNA). This identified that their staff required additional training in:

• Health & Safety, to ensure safer working environments across all client sites.
• Builder Training Centre skills, to improve confidence in quoting specialist support service jobs and strengthening on-the-job guidance.

Although the training would clearly benefit both staff and customers, budget constraints meant the business had delayed taking action. The training was valuable, but not mandatory, making it difficult to justify the expense during a period of growth.

The UKSPF Grant enabled Spotless Cleaning to proceed with the training they had previously postponed, helping them address crucial operational challenges:

Health & Safety Training

• Improved staff knowledge and awareness on over 200 client sites
• Enhanced safety for both the cleaning teams and customers
• Strengthened the company’s commitment to best practice

Builder Training Centre Programme

• Equipped the Support Services Manager with greater confidence in scoping and quoting projects
• Improved accuracy in estimating required time and resources
• Enabled more effective mentoring of technicians during service delivery

The funded training delivered immediate and strategic benefits to the business:

• Strengthened service offering across both cleaning and support services
• Greater workforce confidence and safety across all operational sites
• Enhanced competitiveness, enabling the company to bid for larger client tenders
• Improved ability to scale with a better‑trained, empowered team
